DIGBOI: The arrival of a team of Digboi Police at the nick of time on Tuesday morning here at Tingrai Bazar in Tinsukia’ district averted a youth from being bashed up by an irate mob.

One Kalpajyoti Phukan, a resident of Digboi Bogapani TE area, was called at the site and got a portion of his head shaved by the irate mob in public for allegedly passing communal remarks the previous night. According to a Moran social activist, Phukan had on May 5 passed a remark on the Moran community which subsequently got viral and sparked wrath among the community people.

Phukan was allegedly engaged in a talk with Lachit Moran, a Congress leader on his mobile phone, regarding the arrest of Junmoni Moran, a community woman earlier on May 4.

Meanwhile, the Digboi Police team led by Inspector Dibya Jyoti Dutta immediately rushed to the place of occurrence where the mob including the community youths were punishing Phukan by shaving off half of his head and making him kneel while he held his ears at the market tri junction.

The police arrested one Akash Moran while the rescued victim was brought under its safe custody and later handed over to his guardian.

According to sources, Kalpajyoti Phukan, a close aide of the Digboi legislator, was actively engaged in defending the local MLA Suren Phukan after the legislator was allegedly defiled in public by one of the non -BJP ward member candidate Junmoni Moran, a day ahead of Panchayat polls under Digboi Assembly constituency.

It is pertinent to add here that the arrest of Junmoni Moran by Doomdooma Police on Monday had caused resentment among the community’s people. Similarly, another youth from the Golai area was also arrested by Digboi Police earlier on May 2 for his objectionable behaviour with the Digboi legislator on his WhatsApp chat.

According to opinions shared by people from various locations, Tinsukia’ district has been tense over a period of time due to the sudden outbreak of unpleasant situations viewed mostly as ‘apolitical in nature’ ahead of Assembly polls slated in 2026.

There is no denying the fact that the race for power between the ruling BJP and scattered Opposition aims chiefly to grind their own political axe out of the developments. Pertinent questions on the effectiveness of police administration of law and orders in the district have raised concerns.
