KHERONI: The Diphu-Hamren main road at Kheroni Charali, a critical stretch just 3 kilometers from the Assistant Executive Engineer (PWD) Kheroni sub-division office in West Karbi Anglong district, has deteriorated into a dangerous state, causing widespread disruptions for residents, students, farmers, petty traders, and government employees. This vital route, connecting Donkamokam—the residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang (In-Charge PWD, KAAC) and Hamren, the district headquarters, to the rest of the district, has become a daily ordeal for commuters due to its poor condition.
The road, which serves as a dividing line between the Amreng and Kapili MAC constituencies, represented by Pawan Kumar (Kapili MAC) and Rina Terangpi (Executive Member and MAC Amreng), has seen no significant repair efforts despite its strategic importance. Local residents report that the road has been in a deplorable state for months, with uneven surfaces, potholes, and poor maintenance creating hazardous conditions, particularly during adverse weather.
The situation was further highlighted by a recent incident in which an oil tanker capsized at Kheroni Chariali, underscoring the road’s dangerous state. This accident has intensified challenges for commuters, with students struggling to reach schools, farmers facing difficulties transporting goods, and government employees encountering delays in their daily commutes. The stretch has now become a high-risk zone, posing serious safety threats to all who rely on it.
Despite the proximity of the PWD office and the road’s critical role in connecting key areas of the district, both authorities and elected representatives faced criticism for their inaction. “This road is a daily nightmare,” said a local trader reliant on the route for transporting goods. “Students, farmers, and workers are suffering, yet no one seems to care. The officials and representatives are turning a blind eye to our plight.”
The lack of initiative from the Public Works Department (PWD) and local leaders sparked outrage among residents, who have demanded urgent repairs to restore safe passage. The public called on the KAAC, PWD, and elected representatives to prioritize this critical stretch and address the hardships faced by the community. Without immediate action, the deteriorating condition of the Diphu-Hamren road at Kheroni Chariali will continue to disrupt daily life and endanger commuters in West Karbi Anglong.
