DHUBRI: A shocking incident of brutality has been reported from Batua Tuli village in Assam's Dhubri district, where an old couple was attacked with sharp weapons.
The victims, Askar Ali, 60, and his wife Rupkhan Bibi, 55, suffered grievous head injuries and are now admitted to Dhubri Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
According to their daughter, Anju Khatun, the attack was allegedly perpetrated by three brothers: Shahidul Haque, a portal journalist, along with Sadeq Ali and Sahibul.
The violence reportedly stemmed from a financial dispute involving the couple’s son, who had previously worked for the accused. Witnesses claim that the assailants, led by Shahidul Haque, launched a vicious attack, leaving the couple severely injured.
After the attack, family members took the victims to Golakganj Police Station, where the inspector in charge immediately sent them to a hospital for emergency treatment. Despite treatment, the condition of the couple remains critical.
In response, Golakganj police arrested one of the suspects, Sadeq Ali, in a late-night raid. But questions have been raised as to why Shahidul Haque, with a criminal past of theft, was not brought to book. Local people are demanding strict action, voicing concern at the possible misuse of the profession of journalism as a cover for crime.
Authorities are actively pursuing the investigation, and further arrests are expected as pressure mounts for justice in this alarming case.
