DOOMDOOMA: The 22nd Foundation Day of Ellora Vigyan Mancha (EVM) was observed at the Hoonlal HS School auditorium on Thursday, with president Dr. B. K. Ghosh in the chair.

The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and floral tributes offered in front of the portrait of Ellora Roy Choudhury, in whose memory the day has been observed every year since her death in 2003. Notably, she was the first woman to donate her body to Gauhati Medical College for medical research after succumbing to a terminal illness.

Advocate Tarini Deka, secretary of EVM, Doomdooma Branch, explained the objectives of the meeting. The chief speaker was Dr. Manjit Singh, Psychiatrist at Tinsukia Civil Hospital, who spoke on the topic of ‘Mental Health’.

Dr. Singh engaged in a lively interaction with the students of Classes IX and X of the school. The meeting was also addressed by senior journalist and Executive Member of the Assam Science Society, Dhiren Deka.

In his presidential remarks, Dr. Ghosh highlighted how the fight against superstition and obscurantism gained momentum in Assam after the formation of organizations like Ellora Vigyan Mancha and the Assam Science Society. He also elaborated on how the posthumous donation of human bodies, organs, and eyes can significantly aid medical research and offer a new lease on life to critically ill patients or those suffering from vision loss. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks offered by secretary advocate Tarini Deka.
