GUWAHATI: The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance team has arrested ACS Officer Indreswar Kalita, Secretary of the Excise Department, Assam, following raids at his residence in Guwahati on charges of accumulating wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The case (02/2024) was registered against him earlier this year, leading to a thorough investigation and recent raids at multiple locations. The investigation has revealed that Kalita possesses multiple assets valued at 200% more than his declared income.

A raid was recently conducted at his residence in Nirvana Apartment, Sundarpur, where a large amount of wealth was discovered. Additionally, he owns extensive land and properties in Beltola and Bhetapara, as well as prime real estate in Uzan bazaar and Zoo Road.

Officials seized a significant amount of gold and silver jewelry from Kalita’s two bank lockers. Furthermore, records of multiple foreign trips have surfaced, raising concerns about potential money laundering and undisclosed financial dealings. The Vigilance team is currently analyzing these details.

Indreswar Kalita has been taken to a special investigation centre for further questioning. Authorities believe that additional assets linked to him may soon be uncovered. Following his arrest, Kalita was taken for a medical examination before being lodged at Panbazar police station. Further investigation into the case is underway.
