SILCHAR: In a major crackdown against illicit activities, a joint team of Assam Rifles' Field Intelligence unit and Kathigorah Police apprehended a smuggler and seized a substantial amount of counterfeit currency in Silchar on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the authorities raided Kathigorah market where they arrested Sajib Uddin Majumdar who was infamous for circulating fake notes.
Majumdar was caught while he was travelling in a passenger auto with the registration number AS 11 DC-2970. The police recovered 160 fake notes of 500 rupee denomination worth Rs. 80,000 from his possession after carrying out a thorough search. Besides this, two mobile phones and some incriminating documents were also found.
Majumdar is a resident of Gannigram, Fourth Block located in Assam's Cachar district. As per sources, he was involved in various illegal activities for a long time. The operation was launched based on an input from a local intelligence network that was coordinated by Field Intelligence Group of Assam Rifles.
The authorities are continuing their investigation into the fake currency racket, and further details are expected to emerge as the case develops. The operation underscores the growing efforts to combat counterfeit currency operations in the region and ensure stricter enforcement of anti-smuggling measures.
