GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed the state police to take stringent action against financial influencer Abhishek Kar for allegedly disseminating false and offensive information about Assam’s history and traditions through a podcast on YouTube.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) addressed the issue on Friday via X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the controversial content. "A video from a YouTube channel, named Riya Upreti, is in circulation where an individual named Abhishek Kar is seen making unacceptable comments on Assam's history and traditions," the CMO stated. It further urged the authorities to initiate appropriate measures against the influencer for spreading misinformation.
In the podcast, Kar made contentious claims that women in Mayong village in Assam have supernatural powers to transform humans into animals and later transform them back to human form for illicit acts. He connected these alleged practices to tantric rituals, which brought forth widespread outrage.
Responding to the case, Assam DGP GP Singh said he would take all necessary actions on the issue quickly and legally while maintaining the seriousness of the complaint.
Abhishek Kar primarily offers financial consultancy and runs a YouTube channel with a following of 1.86 million subscribers, besides having 2.9 million followers on Instagram. Most of his contents are about strategies in the stock market, tips on trading, and financial counseling.
The video and its claims have drawn significant criticism for misrepresenting Assam’s cultural heritage. Investigations into the matter are expected to follow, with law enforcement taking steps to address the situation.
