BOKAKHAT: Although the floodwaters from the Dhanashiri river in Numaligarh started to recede on Friday after reaching a severe level, many houses, roads, and by-lanes still remained submerged. The always-busy road connecting Khumtai to National Highway 39 was still under deep water. As a result, the flood-affected people of Khumtai continued to suffer.

While the administration has set up flood relief camps, some people chose not to move into them and were seen taking shelter by the roadside under makeshift tarpaulin tents.

An outbreak of encephalitis in various parts of Golaghat district has been reported. A youth from Roudowa in Numaligarh, Pankaj Kashari, was found infected with encephalitis and is undergoing treatment in critical condition at Jorhat Medical College.

Although the administration distributed flood relief materials, livestock owners were worried due to the lack of adequate baby food and animal feed. On the other hand, the current flood has severely affected about five revenue villages under the Khumtai revenue circle, a predominantly agrarian area.

Farmers have suffered immense losses as their paddy stacks and rabi crops were destroyed by the floodwaters. In total, farmers from 15 villages in Numaligarh reported that their paddy stacks were devastated by the flood.
