JORHAT: A foreign national has been detained for his alleged involvement in conversion activities in Assam's Jorhat. According to reports, Brandon Jewel Develt, a Canadian citizen, was arrested by local police, who are arranging for his deportation back to Canada.
Brandon arrived in India in 2021 on a tourist visa, which expired on January 7 of this year. After his visa expired, it was discovered that he was engaged in converting people to Christianity. He was said to be running a church called Grace Church in the Mission Compound area of Jorhat, where he had been propagating the Christian faith and advocating its adoption among some of the local residents.
When the police received this information, they started investigating the matter. They found that Brandon was doing religious activities which had caused concerns to the local authorities. According to the departmental rules, he was shifted from Jorhat to Kolkata on February 6 and later to Delhi. The authorities have confirmed that he will be sent back to Canada on February 7.
This case has called further questions over the activities of foreign nationals in India, particularly with regards to religious conversion. Local authorities keep close watch on the situation to determine if the immigration laws and regulations are complied with.
