Assam: Former Xatradhikar of Tamulpur Sankardev Xakha Xatra passes away

Gurucharan Mahanta, the former Xatradhikar of Tamulpur Sankardev Shakha Satra and a resident of Charangbari of Tamulpur passed away at around 6pm at his residence due to age-related ailments.

GORESWAR: Gurucharan Mahanta, the former Xatradhikar of Tamulpur Sankardev Shakha Satra and a resident of Charangbari of Tamulpur passed away on Tuesday at around 6pm at his residence due to age-related ailments. He was 101 years old. His demise has cast a shadow of grief over the region. As the news of his passing spread, relatives, well-wishers, and admirers from the community gathered at his residence to pay their respects.

Born in 1927 in Sundarishal village of Kamrup district, Gurucharan Mahanta completed his primary education in his birthplace. Later, he moved to Charangbari village in Tamulpur with his brother, Shashi Chandra Mahanta, and settled there. He engaged himself in agriculture and business while actively participating in various social activities.

Mahanta played a key role in the establishment of Tamulpur Sankardev Shakha Satra and later served as its Xatradhikar. He was also a member of the managing committee of Tamulpur College, a founder member of a rural hospital with 30 beds, and served as the president of the Sapkata, Dalangpara, and Charangbari bandh Committees. Additionally, he held the position of advisor to the Tamulpur Regional Raas Festival Committee and was associated with several other social and cultural organizations in the region.

Various organizations, including the Tamulpur Regional Raas Utsav Committee, Tamulpur Regional Hari Mandir Committee, Tamulpur Sub-Divisional Rongali Bihu Celebration Committee, Tamulpur Senior Citizens’ Forum, Kachubari Sri Sri Gopal and Jagannath Than Satra, Tamulpur Press Club, Tamulpur District Drama Association, Tamulpur Regional Students’ Union, Tamulpur Sankardev Shakha Satra, and Tamulpur Regional Durga Puja Committee, have expressed deep sorrow over his demise.

This morning, his mortal remains were taken in a procession to Tamulpur Sankardev Shakha Satra, where devotees paid their final respects. Later, in a sorrowful atmosphere, his last rites were performed at Bhakatpara Public Cremation Ground. He is survived by five sons and two daughters.
