Assam: Four Animals Including Leopard Killed After Getting Hit By Vehicle In Kaziranga

Guwahati: At least four animals including a leopard were killed on June 18 after a vehicle struck them at the NH37 in Kaziranga National Park.

According to the forest officials, the collision also led to the death of three hog deer along with the leopard.

The incident reportedly took place in the wee hours of June 18 when the animals made an attempt to shift to the highlands or the Karbi Hills so as to take shelter from the floods.

Despite persistent attempts made by the forest and transport departments to prevent such death, it still continues to take place and one major reason behind it seems to be ignorant drivers who flout the rules.

It is pretty common for animals residing in Kaziranga to cross the road and move towards the hills during the floods to take refuge.

Taking this into cognizance, the department issued guidelines to be extra careful during the floods in order to avoid any possible mishaps.

Various steps were taken by the authorities to prevent these kinds of accidents from taking place. A speed limit of 40 kmph was set by the authorities while crossing Kaziranga and speed trap cameras and interceptors were also installed.

However, despite such arrangements, few people still continue to violate the rules, thereby resulting in unwanted animal deaths.
