SIVASAGAR: In keeping with its vision of promoting continuous educational innovations, creative expressions and artistic productivity by fostering a vibrant knowledge-based atmosphere, Gargaon College took a significant step by launching a museum, providing a unique platform for students, faculty, and the community to engage with art, history, and culture. For the purpose of showcasing and preserving the rich culture and heritage of Sivasagar as well as Northeast India, Gargaon College established the museum along with a photo gallery which was formally inaugurated on Monday.
Inaugurating the museum, distinguished academician and Principal of Gargaon College Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta emphasized the museum’s importance in creating awareness and promoting regional culture and heritage. Extending his gratitude to the various donors of the museum items, Dr Mahanta highlighted the importance of a united and concerted effort from the entire college fraternity in propelling the institution towards greater heights. He further appreciated the efforts of the museum sub-committee and announced plans for future expansions.
The museum, exquisitely designed and meticulously curated by faculty members Priyama Dehingia Phukan, Mina Robidas, Dr Baluram Das, and Dr Bornali Dutta, features a diverse array of artefacts from the Ahom Period, including coins, costumes, palanquin, weapons and diverse objects of historical and cultural relevance. It also showcases traditional equipment pertaining to fishing, farming, weaving, a collection of obsolete media equipment and gadgets among others. The photo gallery curated by Dr Shyamolima Saikia, Dr Devajani Bakalial, Dr Mintu Gogoi, and Dr Surajit Saikia displays a striking and evocative visual narrative of historical monuments, festivals, costumes, rituals, etc. of Sivasagar and Northeast India. The various donors of the museum items include Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Dr Pobon Kumar Gogoi, Priyama Dehingia Phukan, Mina Robidas, Dr Nilutpal Chutia, Dr Surajit Saikia, Rituraj Tahu, Harekrishna Mili, Dr Arandau Narzary, Dr Bornali Dutta, Gargaon College Teachers’ Unit, Department of History, Gargaon College among others.
The inauguration ceremony also saw the launch of the Social Science Journal of Gargaon College, Vol. 10, 2024 edited by Dr Nilutpal Chutia and Dr Surajit Saikia. Additionally, the college newsletters Aalok, VOL: XV, 2021, Vol: XVI, 2022, and Vol. XVII, 2023 edited by Ankika Dutta, Dr Saheen Shehnaz Begum, and Jayanta Sonowal respectively were also inaugurated on the occasion.
