GUWAHATI: The Assam government has been given the approval by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to develop 10 waterway projects to enhance religious tourism and streamline connectivity in the state.
The projects will link seven prominent temples in the state, making it easier for devotees and tourists to travel by water. The project with an investment of Rs 645.56 crore shall be developed under Sagarmala Scheme with clearance from the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
These waterways will connect the following famous temples, Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, one of the Shakti Peethas in India; Pandunath Temple in Kaziranga National Park, dedicated to Lord Shiva; and Ashwaklanta Temple, famous for its serene atmosphere and dedicated to Lord Krishna.
Other temples include Doul Govinda Temple in Tezpur, Umananda Temple on Peacock Island of the Brahmaputra River, Chakreshwar Temple in Hajo, and Auniati Satra in Majuli.
The waterway project is expected to boost tourism and make access to these religious places, which are a part of Assam's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Using a "Hop on & Hop off" model, the waterways will provide tourists with a smooth transit experience while underlining the religious and cultural value of the state.
