GUWAHATI: In a significant move, the Governor of Assam, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, has called for a one-day special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly to be held on June 9, 2025. The session will convene at 9:30 AM at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur.

The key agenda of this special session is to discuss and pass the proposal for renaming the Dibrugarh Airport after Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary musician, poet, and cultural icon of Assam. The decision comes as part of the centenary celebrations of Dr. Hazarika, who is fondly remembered as the “Sudhakantha” (Nightingale of Assam).

The Governor issued the order under Article 174(1) of the Constitution of India, enabling the convening of the Assembly session. The renaming proposal has drawn widespread support across political and cultural circles in Assam, with many hailing it as a fitting tribute to Dr. Hazarika’s legacy and acknowledging his immense role in shaping Assam’s cultural identity.

Earlier, the Dibrugarh Press Club thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state government for renaming the Dibrugarh Airport after Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.

“We thanked Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the government for renaming Dibrugarh Airport on Bhupen Hazarika’s name. We are very much happy with the cabinet decision,” said DPC president Manash Jyoti Dutta and secretary Ripunjoy Das.
