GUWAHATI: In a significant move, the Assam government has announced the import of a Canadian breed of pigs to enhance the genetic quality of the local pig population. This initiative, part of the Pure-Line Pig Breeding Program and the Pig Artificial Insemination (AI) Mission, aims to improve breed productivity and strengthen Assam’s pig farming sector.

The government has allocated Rs. 11 crore to support this mission, which is expected to boost farmers’ income and contribute to the state’s growing livestock economy. The program will focus on modern breeding techniques to ensure sustainable development in the sector.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog announced in her budget speech on Monday, March 10, that the state has set aside Rs. 224 crore to boost egg production and implement the poultry sector's commercialization policy. This initiative aims to strengthen the poultry industry and reduce dependency on external sources for eggs.

The government will also set up a committee to explore further measures to achieve self-sufficiency in fish, fish feed, pork and egg production. Furthermore, three pet care hospitals are set to become operational in Guwahati, Bokakhat and Dibrugarh by October 2025.

Additionally, construction is underway for four multi-care veterinary hospitals in Kamrup, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Tinsukia, and a fifth hospital is under development in Sivasagar. A total of Rs. 224 crore has been allocated for these healthcare facilities.
