MANGALDAI: A two-day health check-up camp for the departmental elephants of the state forest department concluded at Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) today. The camp, organized by the ONPTR authority in collaboration with WWF ahead of the rainy season, was successfully conducted by a team of veterinary doctors and staff led by Padma Shri-recipient eminent veterinarian and HoD of Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara Guwahati Dr Kushal Konwar Sarma. Meanwhile, 'Elephant Man of Asia' fame Dr Kushal Konwar Sarma informed that stool samples of all the elephants were tested before mass deworming was carried out. Further, the elephants were vaccinated for the protection of tetanus infection while necessary vitamin supplements were also provided in the camp as preventive measures for any deficiency. Veterinarian Dr Sarma ruled out any alarming symptom of possible disease of the captive elephants barring the injuries caused to the captive bulls by wild bulls during nights. He also informed about the proposed future plans to counter such challenges. The Padma Shri-recipient veterinarian expressed his happiness regarding the increase of the numbers of captive elephants in the Park due to the prevailing pro-fertility atmosphere of the elephants in the Park over the last several years.
