DIBRUGARH: Indian Premier League (IPL) betting has been thriving in Dibrugarh and the recent arrest of two individuals in connection with IPL betting has proved how far the illegal betting industry has affected the youths.
The arrested individuals were identified as Anil Kabri and Deepak Sahu of Dibrugarh but they are not the only persons involved in this racket. Sources said that the main kingpin of the racket has been organizing the whole racket in a well-coordinated manner.
“Many youths, especially college going students, are involved in this lucrative betting business. They don’t have any idea about the game but to earn daily pocket expenses, they get involved in this racket. The mastermind and the kingpin are running the whole illegal business in a smooth manner with the support of muscle power of some businessmen,” said a source.
It was noted that through banned mobile applications, the whole racket has been running. The banned mobile applications are installed in the mobile to do illegal betting.
“Many youths are trapped in this illegal IPL betting. They have lost huge amounts of money in this betting. But the kingpin who is running the whole syndicate has become richer by conducting the betting. It is an organized crime and through hawala they are turning black money into white. Dibrugarh Police should investigate the matter and take punitive action against the person who is running the whole syndicate,” said a source.
Dibrugarh Police recently arrested two persons and a case has been registered under the Assam Game and Betting Act, 1970, which prohibits unlawful gambling activities. If convicted, the accused could face imprisonment and hefty fines.
“Betting not only violates the law but also promotes financial fraud and addiction. We urge the public to refrain from such activities and report any suspicious behaviour,” a police official said.
