DOOMDOOMA: Under the auspices of the Assamese Department and in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Doomdooma College, the second Jadu Borpujari Commemorative Lecture on ‘The nature and characteristics of present classical Assamese language’ was held at the Kallol Auditorium of the college on Tuesday.

In the beginning, Bina Devi Bordoloi, former vice-principal of the college, lit the ceremonial lamp in front of his portrait while Principal Dr Kamaleswar Kalita inaugurated the programme.

Attending the programme as invited speaker, Dr Mrinal Kumar Gogoi, Associate Professor, Digboi Autonomous College, spoke elaborately on the present nature and characteristics of Assamese language after attainment of its classical status as per the decision of the central government on October 3, 2024.

He said that the origin of Assamese language can be traced to the days of Mahabharata as King Bhagadutta took the side of Kauravas while Ghatotkach fought for the Pandavas in the great battle of Kurukshetra. He said that since then, the Assamese language underwent many changes. Dr Gogoi appealed to the students to study the linguistics and morphology of Assamese language to understand its nature and characteristics. He however cautioned that in spite of the culture of a particular language community remaining intact, its language might be endangered and lost forever as is the case witnessed in the present day world.

The meeting was also addressed by Bina Devi Bordoloi, former vice-principal Benu Bora, present Vice-Principal Dr Deepak Mahanta, and senior journalist Dhiren Deka. In their speeches, they reminisced about their association with Late Jadu Borpujari and spoke about his manifold qualities as litterateur, dramatist, lyricist and sportsperson.

The programme was anchored by IQAC Co-ordinator Deepak Ranjan Baruah and was attended by principals and students of Bir Raghav Moran Government Model College, Doomdooma and Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model College, Kakapather. It came to an end after the vote of thanks by IQAC Co-ordinator Deepak Ranjan Baruah.
