GOLAGHAT: An incident involving the alleged assault and intimidation of a journalist on duty by Forest Department personnel in Golaghat has triggered widespread condemnation among the journalist fraternity.
According to the Golaghat District Journalists’ Association, journalist Debashish Saha had gone to the Golaghat Forest Department office on the night of August 20 to gather information regarding allegations that two overloaded dumpers carrying stones and sand had allegedly been allowed to leave the premises through an improper transaction.
The journalists’ body alleged that Forest Department personnel, including Ankur Mahanta and Prakash Das, verbally abused the journalist and allegedly attempted to physically assault him and damage his camera. It was further alleged that the main entrance of the office was closed, preventing the journalist from leaving the premises.
The association also alleged that the journalist was threatened with being sent to jail on accusations of allegedly taking away a firearm belonging to a forest employee. The incident reportedly took place in the presence of Forest Range Officer Kirti Kamal Deka, who, according to the association, did not intervene.
The Golaghat District Journalists’ Association has strongly condemned the alleged incident, describing it as undemocratic and a serious concern for the safety of journalists performing their professional duties. The association submitted a memorandum through the Golaghat District Commissioner to the Chief Minister of Assam and the Forest Minister, seeking a proper investigation and exemplary action against those found responsible.
Meanwhile, journalist Debashish Saha has reportedly lodged an FIR at Golaghat Sadar police station regarding the incident.
Several journalists’ organisations, including the Guwahati Press Club, Dergaon Journalists’ Association, Merapani Journalists’ Association, APKU Golaghat District Committee and Morangi Press Club, have also condemned the alleged incident and demanded a fair investigation and strict action if the allegations are proven.
The Golaghat District Journalists’ Association has urged the Assam Government to take concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists while performing their professional duties.
