DIMA HASAO: A delegation comprising members of the Karbi Anglong Dimasa Hasao Autonomous State Demand Committee (KADHASDCOM) and Karbi Riso Adorbar (KRA) has departed for Delhi to meet with top government officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and others.
The delegation's primary objective is to press for the immediate implementation of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution, which promises the creation of an autonomous state within the state of Assam.
The demand for autonomy in Assam's hill areas, particularly in Karbi Anglong, dates back to the 1950s. Despite the creation of Meghalaya as a separate state in 1972, the leaders of Karbi Anglong chose to remain with Assam, relying on the promise of autonomy under Article 244(A).
The proposed autonomous state would have its own legislature or council of ministers, or both, with greater control over law and order and financial matters. This provision goes beyond the limited powers granted to autonomous councils under the Sixth Schedule.
Earlier, a joint delegation led by the Karbi Anglong Dima Hasao Autonomous State Demand Committee (KADHASDCOM) staged a sit-in demonstration last month in February at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
Speaking to the media at the protest site, KADHASDCOM president Ajit Timung asserted that they would continue holding demonstrations until their demand for an autonomous state was met.
