KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar District Sessions Court convicted Bishnu Basumatary from Serfanguri in Assam for the murder of his wife in 2022 on Wednesday.
Sessions Judge Nirmali Talukdar also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 upon Basumatary under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. If the fine remains unpaid, then six more months of rigorous imprisonment will be enforced on him.
Besides that, he was given seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 201 IPC, as he had attempted to cover up the crime by disposing of his wife's body in the Karbona River. For this offence, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 and three months of imprisonment for failing to pay.
Public Prosecutor Niranjan Roy reported that it happened on July 31, 2022, when a domestic dispute had escalated into a killing spree. After murdering his wife, Basumatary threw her body into Karbona River that flowed beside his house. The incident came to light when the case was investigated, and the criminal was arrested and brought to trial.
This judgment depicts the strong resistance of the judiciary against domestic abuse with justice and accountability towards victims. The court intends to set a precedent in order to highlight the importance of upholding the law and protecting the most vulnerable from domestic abuse.
