TINSUKIA: An adult male leopard met a tragic end after it was hit by a speeding vehicle on National Highway 115 (NH37) near Talap Railway Station in Tinsukia on Saturday evening. The ill-fated animal was crossing the road between Talap Railway Station and Saikhowa Forest Range office. The carcass was spotted by the local people who later informed the forest officials.

According to a forest source, the leopard suffered brain haemorrhage and died instantly after being hit by an unidentified vehicle likely to be a dumper truck that fled the spot after the incident. There have been quite a few instances of human-leopard conflicts in this region in recent times mainly in the tea belt with attacks on livestock and incursions into human habitations. Tea garden workers also fear being attacked while out in the open.  In January, three people were attacked by leopards in three separate incidents in Phillobari under Doomdooma Forest Division.
