NAGAON: The court of Additional Sessions Judge No. 2, Nagaon, sentenced a man named Bhupen Bora to life imprisonment for the murder of one Padma Kanta Saikia, a resident of the same village on Wednesday.
According to the case details, the incident occurred on November 24, 2015, in Putani Khundamara village under Nagaon police station. Bora allegedly assaulted Saikia with a bamboo stick on his head, leading to his death.
The court observed that Bora’s act was intentional and not a result of sudden provocation. After a decade-long trial, Judge B K Nath passed the verdict, stating that while the crime did not warrant the death penalty, the brutal nature of the attack justified a severe sentence.
In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 and ordered an additional six months of simple imprisonment in case of default. The court also recommended that the District Legal Services Authority provide fair compensation to the victim's legal heir under the Assam Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012.
The verdict sent a strong message about the judiciary’s commitment to preventing violent crimes.
