NORTH GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Lovlina Boxing Academy in North Guwahati on Thursday, June 5, a state-of-the-art training centre named after Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain. The academy aims to nurture a new generation of boxing talent from Assam and significantly boost the sport’s ecosystem in the region.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain, along with several dignitaries, sports officials, and members of the public, joined the CM during the inauguration ceremony. Highlighting the government’s commitment to sports infrastructure, the Chief Minister announced a ₹2 crore grant from the Sports Department for further development, including the construction of a hostel.
Speaking at the event, CM Sarma said, “Boxing, along with other sports, is a viable career option. We actively encourage the youth to pursue their passion in sports, and this academy will serve as a strong foundation for many budding talents.”
“The academy is more than just a training facility; it's a dream realised and a promise kept to myself and to the countless young boys and girls in Assam who dream of stepping into the ring,” Lovlina Borgohain said.
To ensure accessibility, the monthly training fee has been fixed at ₹500, making it affordable for young aspirants across Assam. The facility is equipped with modern boxing infrastructure and is expected to prepare young athletes for national and international competitions.
