GUWAHATI: In the wee hours of Wednesday, a low-density earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2, hit the city of Guwahati and the adjoining areas.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake's epicentre was in Kamrup, and the tremors were felt at 3:59 a.m.

"Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.2, Occurred on March 8, 2023, 03:59:08 IST, Lat: 26.23 and Long: 91.44, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Kamrup, Assam, India," NCS stated in a Twitter post.

Two low-intensity earthquakes that occurred last month shook two northeastern states. First, in the morning hours of Manipur, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the region.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.2, Occurred on February 28, 2023, 02:46:39 IST, Latitude: 24.67, Longitude: 93.66, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Noney, Manipur, India” stated the centre.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Tura in Meghalaya after five hours. The National Centre for Seismology provided information for this. The centre reports that the earthquakes started around 6.57 a.m.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.7, Occurred on February 28, 2023, 06:57 IST, Lat: 26.04 and Long: 90.11, Depth: 29 Km, Location: 59 kilometres north of Tura, Meghalaya, India”, the centre tweeted.

Earlier, Dr. N. Purnachandra Rao, the Chief Scientist of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), had issued a warning about the likelihood of a large earthquake occurring in India soon.

According to Rao, the India plate is moving roughly five centimetres each year, which is causing tension to build up along the Himalayas and may cause an earthquake in Uttarakhand.

He was mentioned that, "The surface of the earth is made up of many plates that are continually moving. The Indian plate is shifting by 5 cm annually, which causes tension to build up along the Himalayas and increases the likelihood of a larger earthquake.”

"The area between Himachal Pradesh and the western section of Nepal, including Uttarakhand, is known as the seismic gap and is prone to earthquakes that may erupt at any time," he added.
