GUWAHATI: In a major drug trafficking crackdown, the Special Task Force (STF) seized a car carrying narcotics from Jirighat (Silchar) along the Assam-Manipur border to a lower Assam district through Kamrup.

Based on specific inputs, law enforcement personnel effectively nabbed two men and confiscated a large amount of heroin.

The operation was conducted at Amingaon, where an Alto car with registration number AS 21 M 1450 was intercepted for search.

In a thorough search, officials found 41 soap boxes filled with heroin, tactfully hidden inside the door panels of the car. The collective weight of the narcotics seized, not including packing, was measured at 533 grams (approximately half a kilogram and 33 grams).

After the seizure, two people, Sajmul Laskar (the driver) and Mrinal Hussain (the co-driver), who are residents of Makhan Nagar under Jirighat Police Station in Silchar, were arrested. They are suspected to have been acting as couriers for a wider drug syndicate in the area.

According to the current street price, the approximate value of the seized heroin is around Rs 4 crore. The authorities are still investigating to find out and break the network involved in smuggling these illicit drugs.
