BAKSA: A family dispute over eating beef turned violent in Baksa, Assam on December 18. After a fight with his wife, local resident Bajra Rajbongshi brought beef inside his house, which sparked the incident.

A conflict between family members and nearby people led to the situation rapidly getting out of hand. The local cops responded quickly to the disturbance, arriving on the spot, conducting an inquiry, and then arresting Bajra Rajbongshi.

After further investigation, it was suspected that Rajbongshi's son had purchased the beef from someone belonging to the nearby Miya community.

Since then, the affected family has formally complained against Bajra Rajbongshi, calling for his arrest and the required legal action to be taken against him and any other parties involved.

Notably, a ban on the serving and consumption of beef in eateries, lodging facilities, and public areas in Assam was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently.

In reference to the law that the state legislature passed in 2021, CM Sharma said, "We had earlier introduced a bill in Assam to protect cows and we have been successful."

According to sources, the decision to add the new restrictions to the current beef consumption law was made during a state cabinet meeting. While eating beef is not prohibited in Assam, the state's transportation, slaughter, and sale of beef and beef derivatives are governed by the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021.

"Going further, we have decided that beef will not be served in any hotels or restaurants in the state. It will also not be served during any public function or in any public place," he added.

The Chief Minister further said, "Earlier, we had decided to place the curbs within a five kilometre radius of a temple but now, we have decided to expand it to other areas."
