SILCHAR: A tragic incident has emerged from Lathimara in the Katigorah constituency of Cachar district, where an elderly man, Mohbat Ali Majumdar, reportedly passed away due to the immense mental and emotional distress caused by a forced eviction for the Bharatmala highway project.

The incident occurred following a demolition drive by the administration, which the family claims placed significant physical and emotional strain on the man, ultimately leading to his death.

As part of the Bharatmala project, the administration began an eviction at Mohbat Ali’s home. Family members claim that the eviction was carried out without any prior notice or compensation, leaving Ali and his family in severe financial and emotional distress. Since then, Ali had been battling anxiety and mental health issues, deeply affected by the loss of his home and livelihood.

The family believes that the stress from the eviction led to a fatal heart attack. A relative of the deceased stated, "The pressure from the administration was too much for him to handle. They demolished our home without offering any compensation or support, and this pushed him into deep distress. His death was a result of the unbearable stress."

The local MLA, Khalil Uddin, commented on the issue, stating, “Many people still haven’t received compensation. There is some corruption with the files, and some are being kept aside. I have learned that someone passed away yesterday due to agony and financial crisis. We have been in touch with the ADC for a long time. Some people from the Katigorah area have complained and informed us that their houses are being demolished. We have requested a few days’ time. We agree that there will be roads for development, but how can people go elsewhere if they don’t receive money?”

This incident has sparked outrage among the local community, with residents voicing concerns about the impact of forced evictions for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Many are calling for a more humane approach to such displacements, urging proper compensation and rehabilitation for those affected. The administration has yet to comment on the issue or respond to the allegations made by the family members and neighbors.
