Tezpur: The Territorial Army (TA), a distinguished military reserve force that provides critical operational and logistical support to the Indian Armed Forces and civilian authorities during natural calamities and national/regional emergencies.
The 134 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Ecological, Assam, also known as 134 ETF, established in 2007 in Sonitpur District, was formed to combat rampant deforestation and restore the region’s fragile ecological balance. Since its inception, it has played a crucial role in environmental conservation in the Sonitpur and Biswanath districts.
To commemorate ‘World Forest Day 2025 – Forests & Food’, a mass plantation drive was organized at the Gamani High School in the Sonitpur district on March 21, which was also attended by children of 10 schools from across the district.
In line with the theme of this year’s World Forest Day, “Forests and Food”, 5,000 fruit-bearing trees were planted and distributed with the enthusiastic participation of the schoolchildren, who joined hands with the army personnel to enhance the green cover of their localities. A talk on ‘The critical role played by forests in food security’ was delivered to the students and staff by the project officer of the unit.
The students and staff were also taken to the Herbal Garden & Medicinal Park maintained by the ETF and briefed about the over 300 varieties of medicinal & food species native to our country and the northeast region grown therein.
This mass plantation drive is part of a series of events planned throughout the year as part of 134 ETF’s Community Outreach Initiative to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. 134 ETF remains committed to its mission of ecological restoration and community engagement, embodying the spirit of the Territorial Army’s dedication to national service and environmental stewardship.
