SILCHAR: A massive fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon along the Hospital Road in Silchar, leaving a trail of destruction and triggering widespread panic in the town. The blaze consumed two shops, several residential houses, and the office of the CPI(M) before being brought under control by emergency services.
Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen smoke and flames billowing out from a shop at about 1:30 PM. This was reportedly due to either a short circuit or gas cylinder explosion, according to SP Cachar Numal Mahatta. Although help was called in right away, only one fire engine arrived initially and was insufficient to handle the situation. When more fire tenders reached the spot significant damage had already been done.
Among the establishments affected were a shop dealing in scientific medical equipment, a hardware store, the CPI(M) office, and a residential house located behind it. The fire services attracted further criticism as locals pointed to leakages in fire tender pipes, which hindered operations. "The outdated vehicles are not good enough for such emergencies. Modern equipment is a necessity," lamented a local resident.
Authorities eventually brought in eight fire tenders, along with the support of Assam Rifles and ONGC, to douse the flames. The local shopkeepers also acted promptly by disconnecting electrical lines to prevent further escalation.
The incident has once again set off debates about upgrading fire services infrastructure so that they can respond promptly and effectively during such emergencies.
