TINSUKIA: A Tinsukia doctor has been barred from practising after he was found to have submitted forged certificates to secure permanent registration from the Assam Council of Medical Registration (ACMR).
The case came to light when Pankaj Goel, son of Ram Kishor Goel of Tinsukia, who had been practising as a doctor at Life Care, Metro Plaza Shopping Plaza, Tinsukia, under temporary ACMR Registration No. 23437 since 2016, applied for permanent registration with the ACMR.
After a discrepancy was found in his Higher Secondary (HS) certificate, purportedly issued by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), enquiries conducted by the Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Cell and other agencies revealed that Goel had forged his HS certificate as well as a certificate from B. Borooah College, Guwahati. Using these forged documents, he allegedly secured admission to the Faculty of General Medicine at Kharkov (Kharkiv) State Medical University, Ukraine, where he was enrolled as a student from 1995 to 2001.
After completing his internship at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital, New Delhi, Goel obtained a Provisional Registration No. 16348 issued by the then Medical Council of India (MCI). According to an ACMR order, Goel had also suppressed the fact that a case had been lodged against him by the erstwhile MCI for using forged documents and that he had been convicted by a court.
Despite being given an opportunity to reform by the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi, Goel applied for registration in Assam and continued to practise as a registered and qualified doctor in Tinsukia since 2016.
Considering the case a gross violation of the Code of Medical Ethics, the ACMR decided to permanently remove Pankaj Goel's name from the Register of Registered Medical Practitioners with immediate effect. He has been directed to surrender his ACMR Registration Certificate to the Registrar, ACMR, within seven days.
