SIVASAGAR: The first meeting of the newly elected central committee of the Ujani Axom Muslim Kalyan Parishad (UAMKP), which was founded in the 1990s in Bokakhat, was held at the Rangpur Jyoti Club in Sivasagar on Sunday. The meeting was presided over by the newly elected president, Monirul Islam Bora.

Former general secretary Ahidur Zaman Choudhury delivered the welcome address, followed by an explanation of the meeting’s significance by newly elected general secretary Samsul Hussain. Representatives from various districts, along with members of the Rangpur Jyoti Club, publicly felicitated Monirul Islam Bora.

During the event, Harun Al Rashid, UAMKP’s advisor, administered the oath to the newly elected central committee members. He urged the committee to continue their relentless struggle for the rights of Muslims in Upper Assam. The meeting also formed a Constitutional Amendment Committee led by Harun Al Rashid and Saugir Imdad Yasin.

In a unanimous decision, Ahidur Zaman Choudhury and Jalilur Rahman were appointed as the central spokespersons.

In his address, President Monirul Islam Bora emphasized the UAMKP’s three-decade-long democratic struggle for the socio-economic, political, and cultural rights of Upper Assam’s Muslim community. He reiterated the demand for OBC status for the Goria community and MOBC status for the Joloha.

Bora called on the Assam government to reserve three legislative assembly seats and one Rajya Sabha seat for Muslims in Upper Assam who lack political representation. He also demanded the establishment of a legislative council in Assam to ensure political reservation for these communities.

Highlighting the UAMKP’s 17-point demand charter, Bora announced that sit-in protests would be held in January across eight districts in Upper Assam and Guwahati, followed by a central mass rally in Lakhimpur in February.
