Assam: Meeting on Assam Urban Area Water Bodies Act, 2024 held in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh DC chaired a meeting on Assam Urban Water Bodies Act 2024 to discuss flood prevention measures in urban areas on Wednesday.

DIBRUGARH: A meeting, of the district-level committee for the Assam Urban Area Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Act, 2024, initiated to prevent flooding in the urban and metropolitan areas of Assam, was held on Wednesday in the District Commissioner’s office in Dibrugarh, chaired by District Commissioner Bikram Kairi.

The Member Secretary of the said committee and the Deputy Director of the urban and rural planning department of Dibrugarh district, Biswajit Bhuyan, extensively discussed the Assam Urban Area Water Body (Preservation and Conservation) Act, 2024 and the Assam Urban Area Water Body Conservation and Preservation Rules, 2025 in this meeting, as well as the responsibilities and duties of the district-level committee.

It is noteworthy that the aim of the Assam City Area Water Body Conservation and Improvement Act, 2024 is to regulate and manage the water bodies included in the notified master plan area, along with their conservation, improvement, and maintenance.

In addition, developing water bodies into natural water reserves and transforming each into ecotourism centers and sustainable fish farming areas, ensuring the maintenance of water bodies from any degradation or encroachment, and using water bodies for the management and mitigation of urban and artificial flooding also fall under its ambit.
