SILCHAR: As the weather seems to send signals of early monsoon with a spate of sudden showers in Cachar, the district administration has begun preparatory arrangements for flood. Barak Valley Development Minister Kaushik Rai today chaired a high-level review meeting with key government officials and stakeholders to assess ongoing initiatives and formulate strategies for effective flood mitigation.
Rai stressed the need for a well-coordinated, multi-departmental approach to minimize the devastating effects of floods. He said, ‘’The government is fully committed to protecting the people of Cachar from the challenges posed by floods. We must ensure that all preventive measures are in place well ahead of time, leaving no room for lapses.” He directed officials to work proactively in fortifying embankments, upgrading drainage systems, and ensuring the smooth operation of sluice gates to prevent waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable areas. The meeting also focussed on maintenance and functionality of sluice gates under the Water Resources Department, desilting operations in Silchar town, and the clearance of stagnant water along Sonai Road.
The review meeting further delved into the progress of significant infrastructure projects, including the much-anticipated Gammon Bridge in Katigorah, the road construction from Borkhola to Kalain under the Assam Mala project, and three major projects under Bharatmala.
Reaffirming the government’s focus on both short-term flood control measures and long-term infrastructural resilience, Rai assured that proactive steps would be taken to enhance the district’s ability to withstand seasonal flooding while accelerating urban modernization. The meeting was attended by Udharbond MLA Mihir Kanti Shome, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, representatives from the Sonai Road Development Organization, and other senior officials.
