DHUBRI: A nine-year-old girl identified as Umma Salema has gone missing in the Brahmaputra River after a tragic accident on the evening of March 12. While bathing with a fellow girl, the two children accidentally fell into deep water. Locals were able to rescue one of the girls but Umma was swept away by the powerful currents of the river before rescuers could save her.
Umma, the daughter of Mustofa Sheikh, lived in Kuntirchar Part-II in Dhubri. Eyewitnesses reported the incident, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) acted immediately. A search operation at full scale started on March 13, and divers and specialized teams were dispatched to search the river for signs of the missing girl.
Even though the SDRF has been working relentlessly, the strong currents of the Brahmaputra have proved to be challenging to the rescue operation. An SDRF official said, "The operation is still underway, but the current of the water is hindering it. We are making every effort to find the child."
The authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation as the search goes on, with the local communities also joining the efforts to locate Umma. The incident has also triggered alarm over safety in the river, with the need for greater awareness when engaging in such activities. The SDRF is still dedicated to rescuing the lost girl and updating the public as the situation unfolds.
