Assam: Nagar Kirtan taken out in Dhubri town on 349th Swahidi Divas

A Nagar Kirtan was held in Dhubri town to commemorate the 349th Shaheedi Divas of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, featuring hymns and the sacred Guru Granth Sahib.

DHUBRI: On the occasion of 349th Swahidi Divas (Martyrdom Day) of ninth Guru of Sikh religion, Guru Sri Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji, a colourful Nagar Kirtan (procession with reciting Sikh religious hymns in the town) was taken out in Dhubri town with the Gurugranth, a most sacred and holy book of Sikh religion on Friday.

This was part of a three-day celebration of Swahidi Diwas which began on Thursday and will be concluded with all religious rituals on Saturday.

Thousands of Sikh devotees and sangats (troupes) coming from across the country and abroad took part in the procession chanting religious hymns, which filled the air.

Nearly 50,000 Sikh devotees participated in over 3 km long Nagar Kirtan, which started from the Gurudwara of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji and passed through the heart of Dhubri town and ended at Gurudwara.

On the way of the procession, many a local organisations, social activists and individuals served the devotees participating in the procession, with light refreshments like drinking water, snacks, juice, oranges etc. An ardent social worker and trustee member of Dhubri Kalibari, Dipankar Mazumder told that on this particular day, Dhubri town totally transformed into a tiny city of Punjab and Dhubri town is sanctified with their foot prints. Talking to The Sentinel, president of Sikh Pratinidhi Board, Eastern Zone, Sardar Daljit Singh Sethi informed that on the first day, prabhat pheri was held, blankets  among the poor people, fruits among patients in the hospital were distributed.

“On the second day, a long Nagar Kirtan was taken out in Dhubri town while tomorrow will mark the end of three-day celebration with Bhog Shri Akhand Path Saheb. I, on behalf of Sikh Pratinidhi Board, Eastern Zone thanked the devotees, people of Dhubri and Dhubri district administration for extending all co-operation to make this occasion a grand and grandeur in all aspects,” said Sethi.
