NALBARI: Tension prevailed at Nalbari Medical College & Hospital (NMCH) on Thursday following the death of a two-year-and-seven-month-old child, triggering protests by the bereaved family and locals. Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed at the hospital to bring the situation under control.
The deceased has been identified as Jeeshan Ahmed, son of Nishan Ali and grandson of Son Ali of Paichar.
According to the child's father, Nishan Ali, his son was conscious and in a stable condition when they arrived at the hospital for treatment. He alleged that a nurse repeatedly attempted to administer an injection but failed several times. As per his claim, the repeated attempts caused the child severe pain and distress.
The grieving father further alleged that, unable to bear his son's suffering, he took the child out of the hospital premises. While they were at a tea stall outside the hospital, the child suddenly became unconscious. The parents immediately rushed him back to the hospital, where doctors and nursing staff shifted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). However, despite medical intervention, doctors later declared the child dead.
The incident sparked outrage among the family members and locals, who accused the hospital staff of medical negligence and demanded accountability. As the situation turned tense, police and paramilitary forces intervened to restore order and prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, the authorities of NMCH rejected the allegations of negligence. In an official statement, they said that the child had been brought to the hospital in a critically ill condition and was already suffering from deficiencies of several essential substances required for normal body function. According to the hospital, these underlying medical complications ultimately led to the child's death.
The conflicting versions presented by the bereaved family and the hospital administration have raised serious questions and demands for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
