DHUBRI: A national seminar on “Preservation of Traditional Knowledge in Ethno Libraries of India” was held in the Digital Auditorium of Bilasipara College on Friday.
The seminar was organized by the Assam College Librarians’ Association, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research and the Ethno Library Association of India on the occasion of the closing ceremony of golden jubilee celebration of the Assam College Librarians’ Association.
The seminar was inaugurated by Jayanta Baruah, Editor of Asomiya Pratidin, and attended by several dignitaries, including Dr Narendra Lahkar, Prof Dibyajyoti Mahanta, both former professors of Gauhati University, and Umashankar Debnath, a renowned librarian.
The three-day program, which got underway on Thursday, included a book worship ceremony, exhibition of books, cultural programmes, students’ literary competition, and seedlings plantation programme.
Addressing the seminar, Jayanta Baruah said that librarians have made significant contributions to the development of human resources in Assam. He emphasized the need for the government to pay special attention to rural libraries, which could play a crucial role in promoting education and preserving traditional knowledge.
On the concluding day, a valedictory session of the seminar was held, and a rally from Bilasipara College to Bilasipara Town Library was taken out to mark the beginning of the ‘Year of the Book 2025.’
Talking to The Sentinel, Dr Haricharan Das, Convener of the golden jubilee celebration committee, informed that the three-day long programme came to an end today.
“All the programmes were held successfully and attended by many dignitaries who are pioneers in various fields. Our main thrust was on upgrading and developing libraries with the modern technologies available, preservation of traditional Indian knowledge in the libraries and making an earnest effort to develop the habit of reading books among the students and take them to libraries as libraries are the open university of knowledge,” Dr Das added.
