GUWAHATI: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) restored the railway tracks damaged by recent floods at Simaluguri and adjoining areas in Sivasagar district under the Tinsukia Division and resumed operations with diesel locomotives as a precautionary measure.
NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava inspected the restored tracks, bridges and other infrastructure. During the visit, railway officials found many flood-affected residents sheltering on or near the tracks with their belongings and livestock. To minimise the risk of electrocution, NFR decided to operate only diesel locomotive-hauled trains on the restored section until normal conditions return.
Local trains, including the Nagaland Express, Guwahati–Ledo Intercity Express, Rangiya–Ledo Intercity Express, Lumding–Tinsukia DEMU and Tinsukia–Jorhat Town Passenger, will continue to run via Moranhat. Long-distance trains will remain on the diverted route via North Lakhimpur, Rangapara North and Rangiya, while special trains will continue to provide alternative connectivity to Upper Assam.
NFR said full restoration of train services, including electric traction, would be considered once flood-affected residents return to their homes. It reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of both passengers and affected communities, a press release said.
