DIBRUGARH: Solar lights installed over the Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) dyke have not been functioning for many months due to no maintenance work done by the concerned department.

The solar lights were installed over the DTP dyke under the CSR scheme of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), Dibrugarh.  In this regard, Ammamuddin Ahmed, a social worker in Dibrugarh, wrote a letter to the Additional Chief Engineer, Upper Assam Zone of the Water Resources Department.

“The additional chief engineer of the Water Resources Department informed me through a letter that they have been given the NOC to execute the work, and the work was executed under the construction committee of Zila Parishad and Circle Office Dibrugarh East. The solar lights were installed, but after that, no maintenance work has been done after their non-functioning,” said Ammamuddin Ahmed.

He said, “The solar lights were installed under the CSR scheme and to beautify the area. During the evening, the DTP dyke looks amazing, but now the whole area is plunged under darkness. Now, the department is blaming each other, which is very sad. If the solar lights are not functioning, then they have to repair them or replace them, but nobody is bothered.” The dyke was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on January 24, 2017, in the presence of a large gathering of locals.

However, it needs to be mentioned here that several solar lights over the dyke have been stopped working for the past several months.

“To keep a check on antisocial activities, the lights were installed, but now, after the nonfunctioning of the solar lights, the antisocial elements got a chance to do their activity. I urged the concerned department to take steps for maintenance to repair the lights,” Ahmed said.
