DIBRUGARH: A fatal accident near Lahowal in Assam's Dibrugarh district took one life and left four others critically injured when a car bearing registration number AS 06 AK 8716 veered off the bridge and plunged into the river late at night.
The deceased has been identified as Ishan Gogoi. The injured victims include Akhiraj Gogoi, 28 years; Tridip Gogoi, 30 years; Latu Gogoi, 26 years; and Biplab Gogoi, 28 years, who have been shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred on the Dibrugarh-Duliajan, Joypur, and Naharkatia road while all of them were returning to Tamulikhat in Tengakhat after attending a marriage ceremony. Prior to that, they had dropped off the bride at Bakul Majgaon in Dibrugarh before embarking on the unfortunate journey back home.
Thick fog and reduced visibility are suspected to have caused the driver to lose control, sending the vehicle off the bridge into the river. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) recovered Ishan Gogoi’s body from the submerged vehicle, but he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The other four occupants remain in critical condition as medical teams work to stabilize them.
The tragic incident has shocked the people of Tamulikhat as all the victims belonged to the same community. The local authorities have asked the drivers to be careful, especially during fog, so that no such mishaps occur in the future.
