GUWAHATI: Two Bangladeshi nationals identified as Mahabul Haque and Shahina Akhtar have been arrested by Assam Police for illegally crossing into India near the international border.
Assam Police personnel apprehended the individuals during a routine border surveillance operation. After their arrest, both were promptly deported to Bangladesh. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security in the region.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, a Bangladeshi national was arrested near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Sribhumi district on Sunday and subsequently sent back to Bangladesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed. However, the CM did not disclose the exact entry route or sector.
In a statement on X, Sarma had applauded the vigilance along the international border, which had led to the swift action.
Sarma had said, "Displaying alertness along the Indo-Bangladesh border, a Bangladeshi national was apprehended near the international border and pushed back across the border."
The incident had taken place amid the escalating tensions following recent reports of religious persecution in Bangladesh. Earlier that month, the Sribhumi District Hotel Association imposed a temporary ban on Bangladeshi nationals staying in local hotels, highlighting concerns over minority harassment in the neighboring country.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had announced that 29 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in the Mayang Imphal area of Imphal West district for entering the state without valid documents. A revenue department official was also arrested for allegedly issuing fake Inner Line Permits (ILPs) and other counterfeit documents to help these foreign nationals enter the state.
The arrests had been made after a tip-off regarding suspected foreign nationals in the area. The official, reportedly the mastermind, had provided forged documents to facilitate their illegal entry.
