GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made an important announcement at a review meeting today that stringent traffic checks will be implemented after 10:00 PM starting tonight in an effort to improve road safety and lower accident rates in the state.
Concern over traffic accidents, especially in the evening, has led to this decision. In order to guarantee road safety, the Chief Minister underlined the necessity of strict regulations.
In addition to conducting surprise checks on urban and highway roads, authorities have been instructed to strategically deploy personnel in major locations.
Monitoring drunk driving and making sure that traffic laws are followed are further measures. It is anticipated that the initiative will raise public awareness and reduce the number of late-night traffic accidents in the state.
Due to the proactive campaign that began in major locations like GS Road, a number of bikers and four-wheelers were penalised earlier this month for violating traffic laws, particularly those concerning drunk driving.
Additionally, to further improve compliance, the Transport Department plans to implement stricter procedures in place, like using breath analysers to identify drunk driving.
Given the rise in road accidents during the festive season, CM Sarma directed the Excise Department to look into bar operating hours and identify their busiest days.
According to CM Sarma, some businesses' schedules have not been reviewed, and they are starting to become a nuisance. As a result, the Excise Department was instructed to look into the schedules for the season.
