CACHAR: The Assam Police seized 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup worth Rs 2 crore from a vehicle near the Damcherra area in Assam's Cachar district.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police's efforts on his official X handle, stating, "Based on credible intelligence, an anti-narcotics operation was conducted by Cachar police near Damcherra where a vehicle transporting illegal substances was intercepted." He further added, "Upon thorough search, 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup valued at Rs 2 crore were recovered. Commendable efforts by Assam police."
In a media interaction on Wednesday at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati, CM Sarma highlighted that in 2024, the police seized drugs worth Rs 682.44 crore, including 183 kg of heroin.
"In 2021, police seized drugs worth Rs 420.17 crore, drugs worth Rs 784.55 crore in 2022, drugs worth Rs 742.09 crore in 2023, and drugs worth Rs 682.44 crore seized last year," he stated.
He also detailed the seizures made in 2024, which included 22,776 kg of ganja, 114 kg of opium, 33.07 lakh psychotropic tablets, 14 kg of morphine, and 2.30 lakh bottles of cough syrup. Additionally, 5,059 individuals were arrested, and 3,287 cases were registered during the year.
In its ongoing drive against child marriage, Assam Police arrested 5,978 individuals and registered 6,361 cases between 2021 and 2024.
"In 2023, police arrested 4,927 persons and 641 persons in 2024 during its drive against Child Marriage in the state," the chief minister said, adding that charge sheets were filed in 5,577 cases during the period.
The Chief Minister also reported a significant drop in crime rates in 2024. "In 2021, a total of 1,33,239 cases of crime were registered, and in 2024 the case numbers have come down to 49,966," he said. Sarma noted that the crime rate per lakh population dropped from 379 in 2021 to 139.2 in 2024. He further remarked that the crimes against women and Scheduled Castes and Tribes had also decreased.
