GUWAHATI: In a recent controversy, Abhishek Kar, a social media influencer, has come under fire over controversial remarks against a young woman of Assam while talking on a podcast. Assam Police summoned the influencer to appear before the CID office for questioning. The influencer appeared along with three advocates.
The controversy started when Kar derogatorily made some remarks on women from Assam, claiming that a woman from a particular village in the state could change men into goats or any other animal through magic. His remarks have widely been criticized as derogatory and disrespecting women.
As the public outcry surfaced, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered the police to probe into the matter. The CID, on receiving the instruction from the Chief Minister, opened a case against Kar and asserted that the matter should be taken up without delay.
The backlash intensified further after a video clip of the remarks made by Kar went viral, and Assamese community people were provoked and expressed anger over the kind of false information that was peddled about Assam and its people.
In this context, Chief Minister Sarma directed the Director General of Police to register a case against Kar for false information against Assam. The DGP assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against the influencer and said that the government is serious about the dignity of the women and defamatory statements against the state.
