DIBRUGARH: State Cabinet Minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan today inspected the newly-constructed rail over bridge (ROB) at Thana Chariali before its inauguration.

The bridge was first built in 1965 and is one of the historical bridges in Dibrugarh which connects Thana Chariali to Chowkidinghee but due its reconstruction for the last two years, the people are facing problems to pass through the narrow stretches of road. It is expected that the bridge will be inaugurated before Rongali Bihu and workers are busy giving the final touches.

“Most of our work has been completed. We are placing the tiles. The colour work has been finished. It will be completed soon,” said a worker. DRM Tinsukia recently reviewed the construction work of the bridge.

“For the last two years, we have been facing problems due to the construction work of the bridge because the vehicles pass through our roads continuously. After the inauguration of the bridge, the traffic flow will be smooth. Thana Chariali has become more congested due to the construction work of the bridge,” said a local resident.

The ROB, which will be a two-lane bridge, is being constructed at a cost of Rs 57 crore, with the expenditure being shared equally by the Assam PWD and NF Railway. The reopening of the rail over bridge is expected to bring great relief to commuters who have faced traffic diversions and delays over the past months due to the ongoing construction.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to inaugurate the over bridge during his visit to Dibrugarh this month.

Jayanta Hazarika’s famous song ‘Xuraat Mogon Bhoyal Raati’ was picturized on the Dibrugarh Over Bridge in 1974. The film ‘Bristi’ by legendary director Deuti Barua was shot in Dibrugarh with renowned actors and actresses such as Biju Phukan, Bishnu Khargaria, Ela Kakoti, Bindiya Goswami, etc.
