TINSUKIA: At a time when the government underscored adoption of preventive road safety measures to minimize accidents and said that it is ‘committed to mitigating the menace of road accidents’, the PWD, entrusted to lay speed breakers on accident prone roads, is failing in its proper implementation.
In several roads in Tinsukia, the black-yellow speed breakers that were installed recently broke loose. Under Ward No. 7 (Parbotia) of Tinsukia Municipal Board, several speed breakers were laid on insignificant lanes and by-lanes while ignoring the roads adjacent to schools and vulnerable accident sites. Way back in April 2023, local residents of Ward No. 7, along with Sri Durga ME School authority, demanded speed breakers for the safety of school children. When nothing came through from TMB, the residents approached the district administration in July 2024 following which the PWD officials surveyed the Parbotia Feeder Road and school lanes.
They were told then, to install at least 4 speed breakers to check unruly bikers from nearby Kachujan TE. Around 10-days back, the PWD, instead of 4 as desired, laid just 2 speed breakers that were much shorter than the road. With no protection on either side, the pieces got dismantled leaving nails exposed and are lying in a deplorable state. That was the resultant outcome of public demand after a long wait of nearly 2 years! The local residents decried the construction authority for its inferior quality of works.
