SILCHAR: Former MLA Rajdeep Goala was seen on Friday leading a demonstration by the tea garden labourers demanding their dues which the estate management had allegedly kept pending for years. Labourers of Pailorbond TE on Friday staged demonstration under the leadership of Goala in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Presence of Rajdeep Goala in the labourers’ demonstration had a much political significance particularly after the Lakhipur MLA Kausik Rai was made the Barak Valley Development Department Minister. Rajdeep, the son of former minister and Congress heavyweight late Dinesh Prasad Goala, represented Lakhipur in the state Assembly twice. But just before the 2021 Assembly election, Rajdeep left the Congress and joined the BJP. However, Rai, who actually belongs to Tapang area in Algapur, was picked as the BJP candidate for Lakhipur constituency, usually known as a forte of the Goala family. Rajdeep preferred to skip the electoral battle in 2021. He was later made the chairman of the Assam Tea Corporation which he recently resigned from.

Sources said that Rajdeep has already sent his message to all the concerned corners that in 2026, he would definitely fight the election and that too from his “home” constituency Lakhipur.

In this backdrop, the Friday demonstration by the labourers of a tea garden and Rajdeep Goala leading from the front was being gauged as a clear signal to the leadership. Like his late father, Rajdeep had been leading the Cachar Cha Shramik Union, the influential platform of the tea garden labourers of the entire Barak Valley. Presently, Rajdeep is the general secretary of the Union.
