SIVASAGAR: A recent surge in thefts across Sivasagar town and its adjoining areas sparked widespread fear and concern among local residents. In response to the growing number of incidents, a delegation from the Sivasagar Regional Students’ Union submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Sivasagar, demanding urgent action.

According to the memorandum, several thefts have been reported not only from residential and commercial establishments but also from educational institutions such as Lakshminath Bezbaruah Sishu Bhawan Primary School, PM SHRI No. 1 Town Primary School, and Sivasagar Lower Technical School. The incidents occurred in various locations including BG Road, Amolapatty, Jengonikotia, Babupatty, and Cherekapar.

The student body expressed deep concern over the involvement of minors in these criminal activities. It claimed that in several instances, children caught red-handed during thefts were handed over to the police, yet no substantial investigation was carried out to unearth the larger network possibly operating behind the scenes.

Through the memorandum, the Sivasagar Regional Students’ Union urged the SP to launch a thorough probe into the rising thefts and identify the masterminds behind the incidents. The union’s delegation, comprising Assistant General Secretary, Sivasagar District Students’ Union Jipam Bora, President, Sivasagar Regional Unit Manas Pratim Baruah, General Secretary Monjit Hazarika, and Executive Member, Subdivisional Unit Manas Pratim Dutta called upon the police to take swift and strict action.

The union also demanded the immediate arrest and stringent punishment of those involved in these thefts to restore public confidence and safety.

Alongside thefts, several cases of dacoity have also been reported in recent months in the Sivasagar region, causing sleepless nights for the public.
