GUWAHATI: Assamese scientists have created a software with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that can distinguish between products made on a power loom and those that are handmade.

According to reports, Assam government officials use this software when executing raids on commercial buildings around the state.

The raids come after the Assam government banned the selling of goods made on power looms, such as Gamosa and Mekhela Sador, in the state.

On March 1 of this year, Assam's power-loomed goods prohibition went into force.

All Assam district administrations have sent vendors formal notices outlawing the sale of goods made on power looms that were purchased outside of the region.

Legal action will be taken against anybody who disobeys the ban, according to the notice.

Recently, the Assam cabinet decided to impose a total ban on both the production and sale of traditional handloom textiles made on power looms.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, had informed the media that the sale of power-loomed gamosas, mekhela sadors, and aronais had been outlawed.

The selling of power loom gamosas, mekhela sadors, and power loom aronais has been outlawed from March 1 to April 14 in order to promote Bihu and its celebrations.

The restriction is a part of a bigger initiative to promote traditional weaving and discourage the use of manufactured goods.

"Like our campaign against child marriage, I'm encouraging all the DCs and SPs to organise a campaign against the selling of such power loom devices.

The Assam CM continued, "I have requested the DCs to engage with the textile merchant association to cease bringing in such things before they are seized.”

At the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati on April 14, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intends to try for a world record for the largest Bihu dance performance.

The purpose of the event is to enter the performance of the Assamese traditional folk dance by 11,500 dancers and dholis into the Guinness Book of World Records.
